Highly-decorated late-19th century presentation sword, manufactured by Ridabock & Co, New York. Blade etched in decorative scroll, and inscribed "Vt. Nat'l Guard on one side, and "Awarded to Capt. J Gray, the Most Popular Officer in the Guard by the Rutland Herald August 23rd 1890" on the other. Gilt brass scabbard fittings bear military and patriotic motif Clamshell guard on hilt features a relief figure of Garibaldi, with knights helmets and shields in the background. Knights head finial quillon, with ornate "D" knuckle bow, and eagle perched on pommel molded in laurels. Grip is shagreen over wood, and wrapped in brass wire. Sword is accompanied by a gilt brass stand with figures of two dolphins with upturned tails as supports. Bottom of rectangular base is marked "Hour, Legivnel/Pari/ Made in France". Blade shows light oxidization spotting, with minor contact wear from scabbard. Hilt shows minimal loss to gilt finish, and fittings slightly loose, with excellent grip and wire wrap.
