Original Etching by Hans Figura of THE STATE HOUSE IN ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND. Dated May 4, 1956. The cornerstone of The State House was laid on March 28, 1772, over 4 (four) years before the signing of The Declaration of Independence was signed. The etching measures 10 3/4" X 13 1/4" And the frame measures 17 3/4" X 20 3/4". Matted nicely and in Good Condition. Signed in the lower right by Mr. Figura, who is generally recognized as the leading etcher in color in the world today (1956). Figura was born in Austria in 1898 and died in 1976 and many of his etchings are in the permanent collections of many European Museums.
He was chosen for this etching by The Former Governor of Maryland, Theodore Roosevelt McKeldin, for THE STATE HOUSE, ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND. Maryland's State House has been in constant official use since the early years of the republic. Its cornerstone was originally laid on March 28, 1772, by Sir Robert Eden, last Colonial Governor and brother-in-law of the last Lord Baltimore. In its Senate Chamber on December 23, 1783, General George Washington, Commander-In-Chief of the Armies, tendered his resignation to the Continental Congress. The Treaty of Paris with Great Britain was ratified here by Congress in 1784. All this information is on the back of this very historic piece of art.
