THE BATTLES OF GETTYSBURG WITH AN EXPLANTORY MAP". Original first edition printing of "Sketch of the Battles of Gettysburg with an Explanatory Map", created just a few months after the battle in 1863 by T. Ditterline and published by C.A. Alvord, Electrotyper and Printer of New York. Research suggests that this booklet is largely considered the first map of the battlefield. The cover is of a thin lightly grooved black paper with the title written in gold colored text. The first page is handwritten with what appears to read "No. 2057. Mo. Ho. Society/ Presented by Owen Rice". The second page consists of a full color fold out map detailing Union (blue) and Rebel (red) force's location. Map is labeled "FIELD OF/ GETTYSBURG/ JULY 1ST, 2ND, & 3RD 1863./ PREPARED BY/ T. DITTERLINE". Remainder of the booklet features text describing the battles on the aforementioned days, with information having been compiled from the personal observation of eye witnesses of the battles. CONDITION: exterior is good, showing several large folds with crazing and small losses present around edges. Rear cover shows a small tear on the right edge. Map has not been completely unfolded (to ensure preservation), with a notable tear stemming from the spine area. Pages all appears present, with age related discoloration and some moisture related staining. An extremely intriguing booklet containing a map and data compiled from witnesses of the Battles of Gettysburg, printed while the American Civil War was still ongoing. (02-25342/MLW). NON-GUN. $300-500.
