Sykes Creek, Oregon is located in Jackson County, the first county in Oregon to have a placer gold mine in 1852. Soon after the discovery of gold at Jackson Creek, other creeks in Jackson County, such as Sykes Creek also had gold discoveries. This family photo, taken by an unknown photographer, is of the Hillis family. Written in pencil on the gold mounting are the names of some of the people who appear in the photo such as Grandpa Hillis, Will Hillis, Grandma Hillis, Mary More, Hi More, and John Hillis. One of the women remains unidentified. The photo measures 8" x 6." With the mounting the photo measures 11" x 8 3/4." The mounting corners have some slight wear and the upper right corner edge has a large fingerprint. The edges of the mounted areas are beginning to yellow. The photo, however, is in excellent condition, focused and with high contrast. The men are placer mining while the women sit on rocks above the creek watching the men. The water seems to be milky.
