1863 Dated June 11, 1863 from Portland, this receipt from the steamship Brother Jonathan notes 23 packages 166 inches, weighing 1800 lbs. It cost the sender $54.30 to ship including five per cent primage of $2.53 and wharfage of $1.27. Signed by the purser. 8.5x6 inches, two holes punched on left side for bindering. Vignette of the steamer in the upper left corner, printed by Hodge Wood, Stationers, 418 and 420 Clay Street.

The Brother Jonathan went to its fate July 30, 1865 off the coast of Crescent City California taking 225 lives and $50 million in gold to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Its treasure was recovered in the 1990s and yielded a fortune in San Francisco $20 gold pieces. HKA#62597
