(1894 - 1978) British general, served under Montgomery in North Africa and in Sicily, commanded the Eighth Army at the fourth and final Battle of Monte Cassino, and finally led an army in the Burma campaign. A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., Rosshire, Aug. 15 [1945]. In part: "...I have just got your letter. It arrived today when we had the wonderful news that the war is over. What a glorious relief for millions throughout the world...It is nice to be home again in a cold climate...I would like to thank you so much for the papers you have sent out to the troops under my command...". Very good.
