<B>OLIN TRAVIS (1888-1975)</B></I><BR><I>Red Cross Consultant,</B></I> 1930s<BR>Oil on paper<BR>13 3/4in. x 19 3/4in.<BR>Signed lower right<BR>Titled lower left<BR><BR>A companion painting to <I>Mayor of Hoover City, Red Cross Consultant</B></I> documents the squalid conditions in the 1930s shantytown in Dallas, otherwise known as Hoover City (Hooverville). The littered banks of the Trinity River can been seen in the foreground and the levee can be seen in the background. According to the <I>Daily Dallas Times Herald,</B></I> "Housing in general, was of the worst sort -- tents, rusty tin, discarded boxes, cardboard, and in some instances, trucks and old model touring cars -- constituted the basic building material.....The typical shantytown dwelling contained one room, in which the entire family, irrespective of size, slept, ate, bathed, and lived."<BR><BR> <B>Condition Report:</B> Excellent condition.
