OLD TOWN CANOE SALESMAN'S SAMPLE.
20th century, Old Town, Maine. This unlabeled example of wood ribbed construction within a yellow fiberglass body with inset brass screws on the gunwales. Additionally constructed with four parallel floorboards having brass tacks and brass fasteners running the length of the canoe. An oval plaque screwed to the bow plank engraved in script the monogram "ELO". Canoe is accompanied by a single 16" tiger maple paddle. SIZE: 47 1/2" l x 9 1/2" w. PLEASE NOTE: This canoe has a monogram “ELO”. This stands for Joe Lavoie, an expert friend of ours on Old Town canoes has shared with us that “ELO” stands for Euclid O. “Joe” Lavoie. Lavoie worked at the Old Town Canoe Factory for many years and was a builder of both miniature samples and full-size canoes. He was there during the 1960’s and 1970’s when Old Town phased out of wood/canvas samples and switched to fiberglass and other carbon materials. We believe that Joe retired around the 1980’s and he began to make his own very similar sample models which are almost impossible to distinguish from the original Old Town ones. Of course, these examples are made by the same guy who made them originally when Old Town was producing them. there really is not difference whatsoever between these and the official Old Town ones from the period other than the fact they were made by Joe after he left Old Town. A search of these “ELO” salesman samples usually results in a sale price in most cases of $2,000-3,000.”CONDITION: very good. (02-17862/TG). $500-1,000.
