OIL WELLS IN WEST VIRGINIA
Good content A.L.S. mentioning oil wells, 4pp. 8vo., Parkersburg [W.V., n.d., ca. 1870] in which A. H. Davenport writes a lady friend. In part: "...Slavery has left its footprints wherever it has been and it takes time to remove prejudices...we look forward...to take our place among our more advanced sister states...plenty of oil and oil men and torn up streets and all that sort of thing...our church is prospering...the Darkey Church is still in existence. I often meet their Minister...He looks as straight and stiff as ever and I presume is feeding them on husks [?] yet. I hope there is better days yet in store for them...". Very good. Parkersburg was near the center of the West Virginia oil region of Burning Springs, and the first oil well came in less than a year after the Drake Well, the world's first oil well.

Estimate: $100 - 150.
