Sir Peter Lely (1618 - 1680) Portrait Of Louise de Keroualle, Duchess Of Portsmouth, three-quarter length, her hair in ringlets, wearing a decollete white trimmed orange dress, a baroque pearl at her breast, her blue sash with a jewelled clip, standing on a terrace before a pillar, her right hand holding a posy, her left arm resting on an urn, with fruiting orange tree, a landscape beyond, 49in x 39in, sanded giltwood and gesso frame with inscribed gilt plaque 'Duchess of Grafton' and no. 141 (Louise de Keroualle (1649-1734) worked as a spy for Louis XIV. In 1670 she came to England as a maid of honour to the sister of Charles II and soon became the King's favourite. She exerted influence over the King in favour of France until his death in 1685. In 1673 she was created Duchess of Portsmouth and was the mother, by the King, of Charles Lennox, Duke of Richmond. Thought by many to be a French-Catholic threat she lived mostly in France after the King's death.
