OIL ON CANVAS, DOUBLE-SIDED, 23 1/4'' x 21 1/2'', Morris Cole Graves (1910-2001), WA/CA. Figure Walking Up a Steep Grade and Urn with Flowers. Signed lower right on 'Figure' side. Some buckling and slight cracking throughout (canvas appeared to have been rolled at one time). Small chips noted on 'Urn' side center and center left. Placed in a double-sided dark wood frame with beige fabric matting. Frame has two eye-bolts on top to hang so that the images can be seen from both sides. Light scraping and paint marks noted on frame. PROVENANCE: Artist to Henry Hine Estate to current consigner (provenance information provided by current consigner). A Northwest legend, Graves is known for his ethereal and Asian-inspired images of nature. He was a member of the celebrated ''Mystic Painters of the Northwest'' which, in addition to Graves, included Mark Tobey, Guy Anderson and Kenneth Callahan. This unique double-sided piece is attributed to Graves' early period when he preferred to paint in thickly applied oils. More info. in the white binder.
