[OHIO POW BIBLE] A much used New Testament belonging to Private Benjamin Ash (1845-1935), Co. I, 144th Ohio. The 18-year-old enlisted in May 1864. “The New Testament of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ: Translated Out of The Original Greek,” 316pp, 3"x4½", American Bible Society, New York, 1862. 123d Edition. On the first and second flyleaves, Ash lists the names of eight soldiers imprisoned at Lynchburg, including himself, most of whom died while in prison. General toning and occasional light foxing of interior text; spine lacking; front cover considerably worn; back cover replaced; o/w in good condition. Accompanied by penned obituary and statement that the Bible is the property of Ash’s granddaughter and was carried by him “all during his service in the cival ware [sic].” The 144th were detached to the fortifications of Baltimore and Fort McHenry. They were engaged at Monocacy Junction and in the Shenandoah Valley. While guarding a train near Berryville, VA, a portion of the regiment underwent an artillery attack by Confederate raiders under Mosby’s command. Sixty were captured, including Ash. Accompanied by very brief military service summaries of the eight men listed. Overall a very nice Union POW collectible.
