OH. Springfield. Springfield Bank. $3. 1850s. (Haxby OH-400 G14a; Wolka 2452-09). Brilliant red-orange protector. Proof on India paper. Franklin showing child a bust of Washington, at center; oval portrait of Henry Clay at left; maiden standing by pillar at right. Clearly the most eye appealing note in this Ohio offering from the Schingoethe collection. While the Springfield Bank was one of Ohio's Free Banks, it was exempted from using the standardized format for its low denomination notes. While the standardized notes are special in themselves, the exception allowed the creation of a wonderful design with the inclusion of a color plate. The effect of the red-orange color tint is striking. From the Hy Brown collection, to the Schingoethes, and again worthy of any great collection. ABN. R-7. AU, stamp hinges at sides on back.
