Jan. 4, 1837 Nyholm 34, Unlisted in Rust S/n 2961 "Anti-Banking and Counter-Signed" What can be said about this note? Just about everything! This is the‘Holy Grail’ for Kirtland collectors and is missing from just about every collection. A complete set of Kirtland notes consists of 19 different specimens. There is the denomination set ($1,$2,$3,$5,$10,$20,$50, and $100). Then there are the Anti-Banking modified notes of which only the $1, $2, and $3 denominations were modified. Finally there are the ‘counter-signed’ notes which were re-issued in Salt Lake City consisting of the lowest five denominations. ($1,$2,$3,$5 and $10). Then there are the "Anti-Banking" and ‘"Counter-signed" issues such as the note offered here which are the rarest of the rare. Only the $1, $2, and $3 notes exist in this category. Of all three denominations estimates are that approximately 15 total specimens exist and of those, more than half are tightly tightly held in collections. The breakdown of the current census is 7-8 $1’s, 4 $2’s, and 3-4 $3’s. One old-time collection contains eight "Anti-Counter" notes which will probably not be broken up for decades. Therefore the availability of these" rarest of the rare" Kirtland notes is not overstated. Kirtland notes are collected in several ways, first, by a single example, then a full denomination set, and as a type set, which usually includes a regular note, and ‘Anti’ note, and a ‘Counter-signed’ note. For the fortunate few there is a fourth type, offered here, which is essential for a complete type set, this being the aforementioned "Anti/Counter" note. There are only 2 complete 19 note sets in existence and both are in the previously mentioned collection. Now for the description of this note, which even if it were a rag, would be not only the rarest of the rare but one which is in very high demand. This note is a very nice looking note which grades about Fine. Some may call it a choice VG others a Fine but needless to say the note is 100% intact. All corners strong, margins are good but to note for accuracy the bottom margin is cut very tight. There is a medium color rust stain above the word Society near the top margin and what appears to be an ink swipe over S. Rigdon’s signature. The note has a minimum of soiling and for the grade is quite bright. Now with that being said, the real question is, do you want to take advantage of an opportunity to own the "Holy Grail" of Mormon currency or wait 10-15+ years to have another chance? Strong bidding is expected.
