OCCUPIED VICKSBURG WALLPAPER NEWSPAPER
An authentic example at an affordable price

Very rare and highly sought after Vicksburg "wallpaper" newspaper, The Daily Citizen, 1p. 9 1/4" x 16 3/4", dated July 2, 1863, but printed two days later after the city had fallen to Grant's forces. Due to the great scarcity of paper throughout the South, newspaper and many others) was printed on wallpaper, this particular example bears the well known repeating pattern of two different flowers with vines with a pale blue doily-like background - the same pattern is held by the National Archives. Publisher J. H. Swords abandoned his presses which were seized by Union troops who found the set-up of the July 2nd paper still intact. They left the content largely intact, correcting a typo in the name of the paper, and added a sarcastic note at the end of the fourth column: "Two days bring about great changes. The banner of the Union floats over Vicksburg. Gen. Grant has 'caught the rabbit,' and he did bring his dinner with him. The 'Citizen' lives to see it. For the last time it appears on 'Wall-paper.' ... This is the last wallpaper edition, and is, excepting this note, from the types as we found them. It will be valuable hereafter as a curiosity." Although a number of facsimiles exist, this copy conforms in every way to the known parameters indicating authenticity. Simply framed in glass so that both sides of the paper are visible. A 5 3/4" tear goes into text from right margin with no loss, heavy folds with a tiny bit of loss at fold junctures, some foxing in two areas, else generally good to very good. Estimated accordingly. These papers have virtually disappeared from the market.

Estimate: $1,200 - 1,500.
