Finely Crafted New York Over/Under Percussion Combination Gun, by W. & C. Ogden, NVSN, 28'' blued octagonal barrels with a .42'' cal. sleeved rifle barrel over a 16 ga. smooth bore barrel; top barrel flat is marked ''W. & C. OGDEN/OWEGO.N.Y/CAST-STEEL''. The gun features case colored back-action locks of best-quality construction, appearing to be made and finished by one of the Birmingham lock makers of the time, circa 1860's, with vine scroll and border engraving on the plates and dolphin motifs on the hammers; triggers are double set with a small adjustable set screw; the long extended silver triggerguard and hand stop have leaf scroll engraving with simple punch dot backgrounds and are matching in style to the crescent buttplate, patchbox and decorative star inlay on the saddle cheekpiece, which also feature small cameos of various game birds; furniture mounting screws are blued with lightly engraved heads. The unique rear sight arrangement includes a small sporting ''V''-notch leaf mounted in dovetail, along with a simple unmarked long-range combination ''V''-notch leaf with fine aperture, also mounted in barrel dovetail, with screw adjustable elevator block resting on upper tang; large front sight is a windage adjustable silver blade; rib mounted pipes on each side of barrels hold a brass handled wood ramrod and combination brass handled wood stuck ball remover and cleaning rod. The red-toned walnut stock has dark grain figure along the comb and is finished with a medium-gloss varnish with broad flat diamond checkering on the wrist; gun weighs 11-3/4 lbs. Overall condition is fine with strong mainsprings; double trigger system needs maintenance to improve the functioning. Lock case colors have drifted to dark gray and barrels have a patchy grey patina with a thin even layer of oxidation and light pitting that is somewhat heavier closer to the breeches and has been buffed. Bores have thin brown oxidation; right rear pipe bracket has a fine lengthwise crack; silver furniture has been lightly cleaned in exposed areas, leaving tarnish under the triggerguard and in patchbox, which has a few patches inside under a layer of verdigris. Stock has been periodically cleaned and revarnished over early handling marks and worn areas of checkering. Est.: $2,000-$3,000. (Antique)
