War-dated ALS signed “O. O. Howard, Brig. Gen. Codg Div,” one page, 6.75 x 8.5, November 25, 1862. Recommendation sent to an unidentified recipient. In part: “I write you in behalf of a young officer from our state, Col. Adelbert Ames of the 20th. He is like many others ambitious & wishes me to write to Senator Fessenden. I can say of him that he is a complete soldier, upright, brave…a thorough disciplinarian and I believe possess the ability to make an excellent General Officer. I most heartily recommend him for a Brigadier General.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and a uniform shade of mild toning. Ames was promoted to brigadier general in the Union Army on May 20, 1863, two weeks following the Battle of Chancellorsville. Ames assumed brigade command in the XI Corps of the Army of the Potomac, relinquishing his command of the 20th Maine to Lt. Col. Joshua L. Chamberlain.
