One-armed Union general (1830–1909) who participated at Gettysburg and commanded the Army of Tennessee during Sherman’s March to the Sea. ALS signed “Oliver Otis Howard,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, no date, but postmarked August 25, 1903. Letter to a gentleman in Cleveland. In part: “The event that suggests itself when I see the name of Cleveland Ohio is the assassination of our President McKinley—for it was en route to Cleveland when he was slain. I stopped to see him at Buffalo, but concluding that it was for the best to delay only to inquire, I went on to the G.A.R. Meeting, which was saddened by the dreadful news. That was my last visit to your city.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, scattered toning and soiling, heavier along edges, and a few creases and edge tears. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Interesting recollection of a tragic turn-of-the-century event.
