<td width="100%">
Late 19th to Early 20th century Nyamwezi puppet. Very well patinated and made of a very hard wood. This was an articulated puppet that has lost its arms and legs. Such puppets may have performed at an elder's funeral, with a relative speaking "through" the puppet, recounting the life and deeds of the recently deceased. See "From Ritual to Modern Art: Tradition & Modernity in Tanzanian Sculpture" (2001), pg. 11, figure 6 for a related Sukuma puppet. (The Sukuma are contiguous neighbors of the Nyamweze peoples, and share many artistic traditions with them.) 9 inches, 23 cm. From a renowned and published New York collection.
