November 14, 1776 Revolutionary War Commission to “To Inlist a Company... for the Defence of The United American States....” in Massachusetts
November 14, 1776-Dated, Revolutionary War, Broadside Style Partially-Printed Document Commission, “to inlist a Company, to consist of Eighty-six able-bodied and effective Men... for the Defence of The United American States....”, Massachusetts, Very Good.
This extremely rare, Partially-Printed Broadside Style Commission, with Benjamin Pollard’s name added in manuscript, is dated November 14, 1776, “to inlist a Company, to consist of Eighty-six able-bodied and effective Men... as Soldiers in the Service of, and for the Defence of The United American States....”. Signed by three members representing the “Committee of Massachusetts State,” and including printed Extracts from the official “Resolves of Congress,” giving 100 acres to each non-commissioned officer and soldier, and $20 worth of listed clothing. Also listed in print, October 19, 1776, “Encouragement given by the State of Massachusetts-Bay, to their Quota of Men....” giving 20 shillings per month, to be paid every six months. The manuscript portions at the top and signatures are somewhat faded and worn. This original Document measures 12.75” x 7.5” has some scattered paper loss and missing text, and is reinforced on period laid early paper. Sold “as is” as such. It is even in tone and overall wear from actual use with some edge chipping and wear at folds. The printed text quality is dark and crisp making this example quite ample for display considering its importance and use. Exceedingly Rare. The first we have seen and offered of this remarkable Winter of “1776” Revolutionary War period Broadside Document.
