Stunning and Phenomenal. Carved from a hard wood. The Museum at Seattle has looked at the box and they have determined that it was made for a Sea Captain from one of his pieces of wood on board. This box came from the estate of a Sea Captain who later settled in Montana. He has since passed away and this was found in his estate along with a large grouping of phenomenal Northwest Coastal Indian Artifacts. We believe the box was passed down through generations of Sea Captains. This is the most stunning box we have ever seen. There are no comparable examples in any Museum collections that we have been able to see. Inside contains an ancient bear skull and a rope of sweetgrass, making us assume that this was a Shaman's or Ritual Box. Box has wonderful wear and patina from age. You will never find another example like this so do not miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity. 17" tall, 14" long, 9.75" wide. There is a reserve on this lot.
