The lot features a historic and important carved wood primitive doll of an Indian Woman from the Northwest Coast Indian tribes and dating to circa 18th to 19th Century. The doll shows a solid cedar wood construction with early primitive hand carved details of an Indian woman in a native long dress showing a dentalium shell beaded collar (also called a cape or shawl) and sash. The doll shows excellent original patina and wear indicative of its early manufacture in the 1700-1800's. The piece shows some remaining wonderful detail in the face, sash, and collar. The reverse of the dolls shows two intentional cleansing fire marks on the back, a very unique and rare addition. Provenance: Acquired from the Ye Olde Curiousity Shop museum collection in Seattle, Washington many years ago and currently from a large private Native American and Old Western Cowboy collection in Bozeman, Montana. This is truly a historic and important item as an early authentic carved doll showing the Northwest Coast tribes attributions has never been brought to public sale, with this being one the only examples being known to exist. Measures overall 15"L x 5"W x 2"D.
