Northwest Coast Carved Handle, Flense?
Old, weathered (but solid and dense) wood handle, possibly ash, measuring 40" long. Handle end has eagle head carving, from the style, presumed to be Inuit or Tlingit. Tool end is about 1-1/4" wide and has a couple of attachment holes, as well as a couple of steps at the end. Both sides have a dark outline of what appears to be a double-tanged tool head that would have been tied or screwed to the handle through the holes. We cannot determine what sort of tool this was. Suggestions have included a flensing blade (though the handles are usually longer, and they have slots for the blades to slip into), an adze or pick of some sort, a club (where the tool held some kind of nasty cudgel) or an ax. Overall good condition -- a couple of splintered spots, so letting it slide across hands is not recommended.
