Two reports by Northrop Aircraft, Inc., entitled "Free Air Test Facility Development" (1 April 1947) and "Summary Report: Free Air Test Facility" (14 September 1948), both brad-bound in their original Northrop wrappers. The reports detail the development and testing of a 'free air' facility in an attempt to obtain "reliable aerodynamic data in the Mach number range from 0.9 to 1.2," having found wind tunnels insufficient for such use. The first is marked as "Copy No. 29," and the second is labeled "Copy No. 20 of 21 Copies." The second report contains several technical schematics and original silver gelatin photographs related to the project. The interesting design is essentially a rocket sled on tracks, detailed at length in the reports' descriptions and concept drawings. In very good to fine condition, with moderate-to-heavy wear to the wrappers.
