Northern Plains Porcupine Quilled Doll 19th C.
This is an excellent circa 19th Century Indian tanned and porcupine quilled doll from the Northern Plains Native American Indians. The piece shows an smoked Indian brain tanned hide construction which has been sinew sewn and shows excellent porcupine quilled accents. The quillwork is along the shoulders of the long fringed yoke, around the waist as the belt, down the sides of the leggings and along the tops of the moccasins. The early Pre-1890's doll shows exceptional long hand cut fringe running down the skirt, leggings, yoke and more. The top shows Buffalo hair at the top and the hide has a nice yellow ocher mineral finish. The piece dates to circa 1860-1880's and is truly a wonderful doll in well preserved condition. Provenance: From a large American Indian collection in Billings, Montana. Measures overall 10"L by 7"W.
