This is an exceptional pipe tomahawk marked, "HB" from the Hudson Bay Fur Trade Company in the 19th century. The piece was traded to the Northern Plains Native American Indians and is truly an excellent piece. The tomahawk features a brass like constuction with rocker engraved spotted accents along the outeredge with a weaping heart cutout in the center. The head of the axe/tomahawk shows an inlaid forged iron blade. The piece shows a carved wood haft with file burned accents and brass cover iron tacks. The tomahawk also has a Buffalo like round scalp hair lock with Indian tanned hide showing red and yellow ocher mineral dyes and wonderful 19th century glass trade seed beadwork in sky blue, greasy yellow, semi-transparent rose, semi-transparent navy, and medium green. The excellent piece shows museum quality condition and is truly a wonderful piece. Stamped on one side, "HB". Overall is 22.5"L x 10.75"W with a 11/16" bowl opening.
