Issued to the American Missionary Association and Signed by three of it’s prominent officers; The certificate is endorsed on verso and again on an attached proxy document by Samuel Holmes, the Chief of The Finance Committee and H. W. Hubbard, Treasurer. Signed on the Stub by Reverend George Whipple. A protestant based abolitionist group, the American Missionary Association’s original purpose was to work for the elimination of slavery, educate African Americans, promote racial equality and promote Christian values. “The organization was the most significant educational society for blacks during the Civil War and Reconstruction. Established on September 3, 1846 as a protest against the ‘comparative silence of the older missionary societies in regard to slavery’, the association quickly saw the need for training former slaves when the Civil War erupted. The association was the first to instruct Southern blacks on a regular basis. It opened a day school for freedmen only five months after the war began, at Fortress Monroe, Virginia in September of 1861. The association soon extended its efforts into other Southern States entering North Carolina in mid-1863 to establish schools and to offer any assistance that would help prepare blacks for the responsibilities of citizenship.” (Phylon The Atlanta University of Race and Culture, Second Quarter 1987). At the conclusion of the Civil War, the Association founded eleven schools and colleges for freedmen, including Howard University
