The lot features a very unique and rare item from the Northern Cree Native American Indians with an original Mondak, Montana travel tag on the back. Mondak, Montana is a Ghost Town in Roosevelt County which was established as a town in 1903, flourishing as a hub for selling alcohol to residents of North Dakota, then a dry state, from circa 1903-1919 until its abandonment in 1925. Named for its proximity to Montana and Dakota “Mon-(tana)-Dak-(ota)”. Provenance: From the private family collection of Sarah Alling of Helena, Montana. The family collection of Sarah Alling, a 5th Generation Montanan, began in the 19th Century and has grown since. Her family first settled Montana in 1870. Along with being an avid collector herself, Sarah co-founded with Bruce VanLandingham Sundog Fine Art of Bozeman, Montana which was both part museum and gallery. The piece is from the Northern Cree and most likely was a beaded panel from the late 19th Century used as a seat cover, table doily, or ornamental piece showing an early trade clothe construction with calico backing having excellent 19th century period correct whimsical trade seed beadwork in greasy butterscotch yellow, semi-transparent, semi-transparent red, and a crazy like fancy beaded edge border. The back shows two original travel shipment tags which are both marked “Mondak, Montana” which date to circa 1903-1919. This is truly a rare piece. Measures 14.25”x14.25” square and 17.5”x17” from corner to corner (the piece is flat).
