This is a North West Company of Montreal, Quebec, Canada silver Beaver Effigy Gorget pendant from the late 18th Century to early 19th Century. North West Co. was the major competitor and bitter rival of the Hudson Bay Fur Trading Co. NWC was forced to merge with HBC by the British Government in 1821 due to their violent competition with several minor armed skirmishes breaking out. The piece pre-dates the merger and is an excellent museum quality early Northern plains Native American Indian artifact. The piece a Russian Faceted red trade glass bead cut in half and inlaid on the center of the Beaver’s back. The beaver shows engraved accents and is hallmarked with the “NWC. (inside a heart) makers marked and “QUEBEC” along with the silversmith’s mark. The piece is on a strand of wound Hudson Bay Red White heart and Padre Blue pound beads (the beads have been polished). The gorget measures 6.25”L x 3.75”W.
