c1900 - Cute silver ingot weighing 0.91 troy ounces. Punched "Silverton / N.S.S.M.C. (backwards C)." 1.2" x 0.50" x 0.25". The North Star Silver Mining Company was located two miles from Silverton. The North Star No. 1 claim was discovered in 1876 on what was then called the Solomon Lode and is located high up in San Juan on Sultan Mountain. It is a classic stringer quartz vein type lode composed mainly of argentiferous galena. Henderson and Burchard reported that the vein system typically carried 70-80 ounces of silver per ton and 35% lead. By 1902 when famous mining engineer Tex Rickard visited the property, they had installed a tram running from the highest point of the mine at an altitude of 13,000 feet down to the Animas River, a drop of 3200 feet over a length of 2.3 miles. At this time, this was the only economic way to get the ores to the mills. Other nearby mines also had trams, including the Silver Lake and Iowa mines. We know of four of these ingots, and suspect their construction was for the tourist trade after 1900. -61611
