North Carolina October 22, 1803.<p>A magnificent sheet of nine Gem New notes from Salem, North Carolina. The sheet itself has a single light fold between the top six subjects and the bottom three subjects, but it is far away from the design of any of the notes. Issued by the Moravian Settlement in Salem. Salem, which is now part of Winston-Salem, was founded by the Moravians in 1766. The Moravians, or more accurately the Moravian Church, traces its origins to the followers of John Hus, the bohemian martyr who was burned at the stake in 1415. We've seen circulated examples of these notes offered individually at $1000 or so but have never seen another multiple or a single uncirculated note. The sheet consists of four 2d notes, three 3d notes and two 4d notes. The 3d notes have a bee vignette and the other two denominations bear geometric patterns in the same place. All nine notes are fully signed by two members of the community, making them ready for issue. An incomparable piece of Southern history that could easily realize or exceed . . .
