Signer of the Declaration of Independence from North Carolina (1741–1788) who also practiced law and served in the Continental Congress. Very rare ink endorsement signature, “J. Penn,” on the reverse of a manuscript legal document, one page, 7.5 x 6.25, May 4, 1774. An arrest order, in part: “George the third by the grace of God King of great Britain &c To the sheriff of Granville County We Command you that you take the body of Robert Robertson Labourer if he be found in your bailiwick and him safely keep so that you have him before the Justices of our Inferior Court.” Signed at the conclusion of the document by clerk Reuben Searcy. In very good condition, with repaired separations to vertical folds, significant dampstaining to top edge, and some scattered foxing and toning.
