Minneapolis and printed in 1965 from the first edition done in 1841. The complete title is, "Letters and Notes of the Manners, Customs, and Conditions of the North American Indians". The book was written during an eight years travel amongst the wildest tribes of Indians in North America during circa 1832-1839. He visited eighteen tribes, including the Pawnee, Ponca, and Omaha in the south and the Mandan, Hidatsa, Cheyenne, Crow, Assiniboine, and Blackfeet in the north. There he produced the most vivid and penetrating portraits of his career. George Catlin was an American adventurer, lawyer, painter, author, and traveler, who specialized in portraits of Native Americans in the Old West. Traveling to the American West five times during the 1830s, Catlin wrote about and painted portraits that depicted the life of the Plains Indians. The two volume set shows four hundred illustrations that were originally carefully engraved from Catlin's original paintings. The blue cloth bound gold gilt hardcover books are in nice overall condition, slight scuffing noted to cover edges.
