Protestant preacher and author (1898–1993) best known for his self-help best-seller The Power of Positive Thinking. TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, May 25, 1983. Peale writes to Herb Moore, Classical Music Director at WRVH, in part: “I am complimented that you wish to include me in the series you are planning concerning preferences in classical music, and am pleased to offer my own. Since a great part of my life has been spent in the ministry, my preference in classical music is centered mainly in the religious field. I find the great oratorios, such as Handel’s ‘Messiah,’ and the wonderfully inspiring ‘Hallelujah Chorus,’ from that work uplifting. Haydn’s ‘Creation,’ with its musical description of the beginning of the firmament, is also a glorious work that lifts the heart. The works of Bach, too numerous to mention specifically, are magnificent. To hear a chorus sing ‘Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring’ is an experience that heightens one’s spirituality. The music of Edvard Grieg, although not in the religious field, is very descriptive of the majestic nature of his native Norway and, somehow, brings one very close to God through nature.” In fine condition, with trivial brushing to the end of the signature. A comprehensive musical reflection from the multi-faceted preacher. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
