Norman Rockwell Ltd Ed Bronze Sculpture: Tackled
This is a Norman Rockwell bronze sculpture inspired by the Saturday Evening Post cover, November 21, 1925. Title: "Tackled"This is Rockwell's first real sports cover. Baseball appealed to him more than football, and beginning with the l00th anniversary of the game for which he did the July 8, 1939 cover, he painted several memorable scenes which showed baseball greats - Ted Williams, Red Schoendienst - in action, or, more exactly, reaction.
Catching figures in action and more specifically at the moment of impact, as here, is next to impossible because the moment is too fast to freeze. Still, Rockwell has made a success of the moment, causing the ball to fly with the wind that got knocked out of the model, capturing impact without suggesting pain or ineptitude. In the days before the carefully uniformed midget footballers of today, fragments of uniforms were highly prized and worn more as badges of honor than for the protection they might offer players. The old style ball with its lacing - it seemed to have been laced from within by gnomes who lived inside, and stuffing the rubber bladder back in the leather was one of life's most delicate operations the helmets and the boots suggest that the last thing Rockwell wants to do is ennoble the gladiatorial contest.
