This is a Norman Rockwell bronze sculpture inspired by the Saturday Evening Post cover, August 18, 1928. Title: "Fleeing Hobo" Times were bad in 1928 and unemployment was rampant. Hobos, or Kings of the Road as they called themselves, were common and they were a favorite subject of authors, artists, and cartoonists. Financially troubled people silently envied their free and easy life on the rails, where the only problem might be an exuberant dog hot on the heels of a hobo who has just pilfered a hot apple pie from someone's windowsill.
Rockwell enjoyed painting such colorful characters and this is the fifth one to grace the cover of The Saturday Evening Post. And we're sure he'll make it back to his associates in the freight car just as soon as the pup gasps for breath.
Two of Rockwell's earlier tramps, September and October, 1924, had a better experience when they encountered friendly pooches who were willing to share their experiences and join them in their travels. Buyer's Premium: A buyer's premium will be in effect for all auction sales and shall be added to each purchase to reach the total sales price. Payment Due: ALL PURCHASES MUST BE PAID FOR IN FULL UPON RECEIPT OF EMAIL INVOICE. Invoices will be e-mailed within 24 hours of auction closing. The Seller reserves the right to put items back up for auction if payment is not received within 10 days of receipt of the email invoice. No item will be released or removed before the conclusion of the sale and payment is made in full. No goods will be released without presentation of shipping ticket marked "Paid in Full." Buyer shall communicate with Seller within three (3) days of the completion of the auction. Payment in full is due upon receipt of notification of a successful bid and full payment shall be received by the Seller no later than 10 days following the auction date. Although obtained from sources deemed reliable, the Seller and Auctioneer make no warranty or guarantee to the accuracy of the information contained in any auction listing. 13. Entire Agreement; Waiver. This Agreement, including the Universal’s User Agreement and all exhibits and other documents are incorporated herein by reference, set forth the entire understanding and agreement of the parties and supersede any and all other written or oral agreements or understandings between the parties as to the subject matter of this Agreement. In the event of an inconsistency between this Agreement and any other document, which is part of this Agreement, the terms of this Agreement shall govern. From time to time during the term of this Agreement, Universal Collectibles, Universal B&I or Universal Live Auctions may amend this Agreement (including any incorporated documents) by posting the amended terms on any Universal site, emailing notice of the amendment to the Buyer, or otherwise communicating such amendment to the Buyer. Each amendment will be effective immediately after it is initially posted on any Universal site, emailed to the Buyer, or otherwise communicated to the Buyer. The waiver of a breach of any provision of this Agreement will not operate or be interpreted as a waiver of any other or subsequent breach.
