Storefront signs read crisp, including the Bank of Cape Nome, Standard Theatre, Behring Saloon, Olympia Beer, and Nevada. The Behring Saloon was operated by Alfred Lawrence Schow. Schow was in Nome until 1917, when he moved to Ketchikan. Photographer identified as Beverly Bennet Dobbs. The author has seen numerous photos of Dobbs’ in Nome between 1905 and 08. Mautz tells us that Dobbs photographed the Seward Peninsula extensively (no dates given). The bottom of the matte reads “Front Street Looking East.” Nome is located in northwestern Alaska on the Seward Peninsula, near the Arctic Circle. It is a port town on Norton Sound. Gold was discovered in Anvil Creek in 1898 and the rush to Anvil City (modern day Nome) soon followed. By 1910, Nome had long been a developed city. In 1900 there were 20,000 people inhabiting the city.
