Nome,AK - c1900 - Mining with Hydraulics Photographs :
Lot of 2. Seven men pose amidst a hydraulic mining operation on the western coast of Alaska. Photographer, Harry Hammond of Portland worked with J. A Saaroni in Nome, Alaska, 1901 (Mautz). Both photographs measure 6 3/8”x8 1/4”, grey single mounts 10 3/4"x9", high contrast, and focus is sharp except for the three gentlemen in the background. One photograph has a burst pipe. Minor crease runs through the upper portion of photograph without burst pipe. A well dressed man stands with his dog while holding a gold pan. Gold was discovered in Nome at Anvil Creek in 1898, but the big gold rush to Nome did not start until 1899, when gold was discovered on the beach. The population in Nome swelled to more than 12,000 by 1900.
