Nome,AK - Nome County - July 1, 1901 - Second Class Saloon Photograph :
Image seen on cover of saloon book. A two story building with over 30 men and about 5 women standing outside. A man, possibly the owner, can be seen standing in the center window on the 2nd floor. Signs on building read, "The only second class saloon in Alaska," and "Eastern beer only." Seven signs in the shape of beer bottles with labels noted: Dick Dawson, Senator Freeze, Chase C. Sutter, and S. Nichols. Possible initials of photographers, "R.A. H&S," noted at bottom left. Measures 6 1/8" x 8 3/4". White edges with minor yellowing and a few stains around the top. Contrast and focus are good. Originally named the Dexter Saloon, but advertised as the Second Class Saloon. It was run by Wyatt Earp, his wife Josie, and partner Charlie Hoxie during the height of the Alaska Gold Rush. This photograph is shown on page 181 of One Man’s Gold Rush by Murray Morgan, 1967 with this cut line ” Wyatt Earp owned ‘the only second class saloon in Alaska’.”
Today on the site of the saloon stands a government office building.
