Noel Sickles - Scorchy Smith Daily Comic Strip Origin Noel Sickles - Scorchy Smith Daily Comic Strip
Noel Sickles - Scorchy Smith Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 7-16-36 (Associated Press Syndicate, 1936). Noel Sickles' contributions to the comic strip medium were brief, but lasting; among the comic book artists inspired by Sickles were Fred Ray and Alex Toth. Sickles adapted a new cartoon drawing approach inspired by magazine illustrator Harold Von Schmidt's ink drawings for Willa Cather's story, "Death Comes For the Archbishop;" the result was an impressionistic brushwork that defined form by shadow shapes as much as by outlines. The technique managed to be impressionistic and yet, paradoxically, almost photographic in appearance. The image area of this thrilling daily measures 21" x 4.5". The art was drawn on duo tone paper; the tones remain vivid and the art is in Excellent condition. No collection of comic strip art would be complete without a handsome example from the great Noel Sickles, so put in a bid!
