1853 Another issue absolutely certain to have been made in 1853; two examples were recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Winfield Scott, which sailed December 1, 1853, one Die State I and the other Die State II (see lots 151 and 152) (cracked through tops of wreath and numerator). Also made by Nouizillet and issued in great numbers; probably the commonest Period One small California gold piece available to collectors. Same head, now surrounded by 12 stars, one opposite bust point; similar reverse with 5 pairs of berries on each branch. Plate Coin, first edition, Breen-Gillio, California Pioneer Fractional Gold.
