1853 Same obverse, crude reverse with round bow to wreath. Maker uncertain, probably either Joseph Brothers (their obverse die) or successor firm Frontier Deviercy Co. Only 3 or 4 known: this piece, one in the Ken Stefaniak Collection in 2002, a repaired example now in the Robert H. Lande Collection, and one certified by NGC in 2010, possibly the same as the Stefaniak coin (the latter two surfaced after publication of the second edition of California Pioneer Fractional Gold.). Plate Coin, second edition, Breen-Gillio, California Pioneer Fractional Gold. Bright, looks Uncirculated, filed at top, slightly reflective reverse, though condition is irrelevant for such a great rarity. PCGS Genuine (Cleaning - AU Details). Ex Bowers and Merena Jay Roe 9/14/2003, Lot 16, Ex Jay Roe Collection, ex Mid-American Rare Coin Auctions May 1989, Lot 1696; Ex New Netherlands Clarke, April 1956, Lot 493; Ex T. James Clarke (collected circa 1927-1952). Totheroh`s notes, and the cataloguer disagrees with the cleaned designation newer inspection encouraged. Only one sale of this variety recorded. The Jay Roe catalog states a net MS60 grade, downgraded only because of the invisible file mark on the top edge. Serial# 21348851 Totheroh Collection HKA#63339
