No Date $1 Eisenhower Dollar--Struck on a Clad Dime Pl
Undated<$1> Eisenhower Dollar--Struck on a Clad Dime Planchet--MS63 PCGS. On the obverse Eisenhower's portrait is visible from the hairline to the tip of the nose and the front of the mouth and nearly to the jawline, with the ear and hair in back of it visible. On the reverse the eagle is neatly centered, with the inner portion of both wings, the claws and tail, the crater below, and the FG designer's initials all clear. The centering of the Eisenhower design on the much smaller dime planchet has, of course, ensured that no trace of the date or peripheral legends is visible. The Ike dollar details are fairly well struck up, and the coin is lustrous on both sides.
This is a fascinating example of the nation's largest circulating coin from the 1971-78 era, the Eisenhower dollar, struck on a planchet from the nation's smallest coin of that timeframe. Ike dollar errors struck on clad dime planchets are extremely rare, with only a half dozen or so pieces estimated to exist, including an ANACS MS62 in our 1999 ANA sale, and one also owned by noted pattern expert, Saul Teichman. There are also at least two double struck examples on dime planchets, two uniface examples on dime planchets, including the A.K. Berry example that was plated in the seventh edition of Judd, and at least one struck on dime scrap. This lot represents a significant opportunity to acquire one of the rarest and most spectacular types of recent mint errors.
Ex: 2003 ANA Auction (as an ANACS MS63); earlier King, Warren collections.
