[nixon, Richard] Jade Elephant From Nixon's 1972 Trip To China. Carved jade elephant, light green, 3¾ x 2¾ in. on a walnut base with a plaque reading: "Jade Elephant 1972 Trip to China From President Nixon to Sanford Fox Director of Protocol The White House." President Nixon's trip to China in February 1972 ended 25 years of isolation between the United States and the People's Republic of China and resulted in the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1979. Sanford Fox joined the White House Staff in 1952 and worked there until his retirement in 1975. He oversaw the planning of events throughout the Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford administrations.
