This is an absolutely wonderful and exciting Nippon find! It is a humidor with highly raised enamel of a deck of playing cards, a pipe, and poker chips. On the lid you have cigarettes and stick matches in highly raised enamel - even the little blue tips of the stick matches are highly raised. Inside the lid it has the original sponge to keep the tobacco moist. I think it is a great piece. The condition is very good! It is marked on the bottom Hand Painted Nippon with the M inside the Wreath in green. There is a similar example of this piece in the book Collector?s Encyclopedia of Nippon Porcelain ? Identification and Values by Joan F Van Patten on page 87. They are part of the Playing Card Décor ? which is generally found on humidors, smoke sets, mugs and plaques. These pieces carry the green # 47 mark which is on page 145 and reads as follows: M-in-wreath, Hand Painted Nippon (M stands for importer, Morimura Bros.); found in green blue, magenta, and gold colors. Mark used since 1911. If you are a collector of humidors, tobacco or smoking memorabilia not to mention Nippon I would say that this is a must have for your collection! It measures 5 ½? at highest x approx 5 ½? in overall diameter.
