Ninth Plate Tintype of Armed Yank Cavalryman,
Ninth Plate Tintype of Armed Yank Cavalryman,
from the western theater gripping a French-made LeFaucheux revolver tucked into his belt. He wears a standard shell jacket over his civilian shirt and blue tinted trousers. The rectangular belt plate is regulation US cavalry. Barely visible on the pork-pie hat is a feather and what looks like a two digit numeral that would suggest Missouri cavalry or State Militia as they were the recipients of most of the 12,000 pinfires purchased by the North in 1861-62. This image was erroneously published some years ago in one of the volumes of "Confederate Faces." Housed in a complete composition case.
The unvarnished plate shows some loss of emulsion in two spots around the mat line, else fine with GOOD clarity.
