Tintype of John Stockwell of the 76th Illinois Infantry, Company K. Identified by accompanying clipped period piece of paper housed behind image, ''John Stockwell, 7/25/62…K 76 Ill.'' Stockwell mustered into service on 22 August 1862 and mustered out on 22 July 1865 at Galveston, Texas. In the May 1864 expedition to Yazoo City, the 76th Illinois Infantry participated in the battles of Benton, Vaughn's Station and Deasonville. Plate is trimmed down, but fits in a ninth-plate mat. Right margin piece detached. Good condition.
