Auction Date:2009 Jun 24 @ 10:00 (UTC-04:00 : AST/EDT)
Location:6270 Este Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45232, United States
a scarce ambrotype of the ubiquitous Burnside (1824-1881) taken as colonel of the 1st Rhode Island with a faint date of June 18, 18?? penciled in the case behind the plate. An image from this same sitting is housed at the National Portrait Gallery.

Burnside reluctantly ascended to command the Army of the Potomac as McClellan’s star faded and was in turn replaced by Hooker. As a senior major general, Burnside held departmental command and then took over the 9th Corps for the rest of the war, balancing touchy issues of seniority along the way. His failure at the Crater in July 1864 ultimately caused him to resign at the very end of the war. He became imminently successful in business and Rhode Island politics until his death.

Condition: Plate EXC. with applied blacking on back, sharp clarity. Housed in a near perfect gutta percha case with generic floral design.
