This Niloak vase is a rare find! In a block, rectangular design, it may also be used as a holder of other items. This piece has not glazed on the exterior, which represents Mission Swirl production of the middle 1930s. Early Mission Swirl pieces were glazed on both the inside and the outside--this practice was abandoned as the glaze tended to darken the colors of the clay. Later Mission Swirl pieces were then glazed on the inside only. This piece has an interior green glaze.

The "Mission Swirl" pattern results as the potters threw lumps of several colors of clay on the wheel. The colorful clays used were naturally occurring clays found in Arkansas.

Measuring 4 5/8 inches tall, the vase has a 4 1/2 x 2 1/2-inch rectangular top. It is 2 1/2 inches wide on the sides and has a 1 7/8 x 3 5/8 inch rectangular base.

This vase is in excellent condition! It will make a great addition to a Niloak Pottery collection!
