Nights (Leilot) - Booklet with 29 large linocuts depicting the horrors of the Holocaust, by Ari Glas, Tel Aviv, HaKibbutz HaMeuchad, presumably 1942. Each illustration is signed in pencil by the artist. The illustrations are in black and white. Each illustration is printed on an entire page. Paperback, printed binding. The illustrations are from an early time, right after the horrors started to be exposed. With an essay by Dov Sadan. With titles of the illustrations printed on folded edges. Printed without a year.
Ari Glas (1897-1973) was born in Berlin as Erich Glas. He studied at the Munich Academy of Arts and afterwards in 1919-1920, at the Das Bauhaus Modern Academy. He was close to Max Liebermann, and worked under his supervision for a few years.
Rare book, only a few copies were printed, listed in the Bibliography of the Hebrew Books, according to a copy in the Sha'arei Tzion Library. The artist's signature appears on each painting in this copy, other than the title page.
Overall in good condition: piece on back cover has been glued, slightly yellowing pages.
